Alvin Garrett is about as multi-dimensional as they come, so it’s hard to define him by any one title. As a songwriter, Garrett’s incomparable penmanship can be found on R&B songs by Joe, Kelly Rowland, Fantasia, Johnny Gill, Ruben Studdard, Noel Gourdin, Jordan Knight, Jarvis and more. He’s also an accomplished gospel writer, penning for the likes of Deitrick Haddon, Trin-I-Tee 5:7, Alexis Spight, Lowell Pye, Darwin Hobbs, and more. In these two genres, Garrett has earned a Grammy® nomination, a Soul Train Award, a Dove Award, and a Stellar Award nomination.
As a bass guitarist, Alvin Garrett’s first national tour was with The American Idol Season 2 Tour. Afterwards, he took the position of musical director for that year’s winner and hometown friend, Ruben Studdard. In 2000, Garrett and Studdard co-founded the band, Just A Few Cats, in Birmingham, AL and continues touring and performing with the band to this day.
After graduating with a BSBA in Business Management from Samford University in Birmingham, AL in 2000, Garrett established The Music Caterers, LLC. TMC, LLC is a boutique booking and management service that provides custom made ensembles and DJs for weddings, corporate events, and more.
In 2012, Garrett released his debut album entitled, “Expose Yourself”, critically-acclaimed as one of the sexiest R&B albums of our time. In 2015, Alvin’s style and lyrical content took a turn towards inspirational soul with the release of his hit song, “By Myself.” This song climbed the Urban AC billboard charts while receiving extensive play on Gospel, Blues, and Southern Soul stations.
Now, after several years of climbing and grinding as an independent artist, the Grammy®-Nominated artist invites everyone to join him on “This HILL”. Garrett’s sophomore album truly captures this Alabama boy’s old soul and takes you on a neo-vintage journey through his musical mind and life. The lead-off single, “This HILL,” pays tribute to the lessons he was taught growing up, which helped shape his relentless spirit and pursuit of his goals.
His charismatic personality and uber-positive attitude is on full display with “Have A Good Time,” and in the classic William DeVaughn hit, “Be Thankful For What You Got.” Alvin’s celebration of women and their individuality is captured in the Prince-styled funk jam, “It’s You”, and he beautifully channels his inner Al Green with the gentleman-esque ballad, “What I’ll Do.”
Garrett is joined by his good friend and recent Grammy®-Award winner, PJ Morton, on the soul-stirring groove, “Wait.” “Wait” and the closing song, “Love Is Still The Answer,” prove that Garrett has no interest in escaping his gospel roots.
Alvin Garrett’s work ethic and tenacity is unmatched, and he regularly gives back to his community with songwriting workshops and mentoring at local schools and charities.
